Test results of the same students after repeating 2nd (IAS) grade with me. These students had painting, drawing, and jigsaw puzzles almost everyday. At recess they each had a ball and were instructed in repetitive motion exercises.
This year my students scored higher than state average in all ten areas tested.

Student Test  Scores

What these test scores say is that my students, from a gang-infested, inner- city school, improve tremendously with my Whole Phonics method of teaching language arts: which also includes painting, drawing, jigsaw puzzles, and later, instruments and dancing.

The first tests show the Intensive Academic Support class my principal asked me to take.  They were second graders who had failed the previous year.  It was much like special ed. but they came around and improved more dramatically than any class I had ever had.
The next tests show that my 3rd graders' average scores in all five areas of math and all five areas of language arts were higher than the average of all 3rd graders in the state.  These students got to paint and draw, work jigsaw puzzles, practice their recorders and square dance every day.   This has convinced me that the arts are most effective.  Many have asked me how we had time for all of this; the children were motivated by the arts!  It's not more federal funding that we need; it's more of the arts.
